EMDR Intensives
Concentrated Trauma Processing Over a Few Days
Concentrated Trauma Processing Over a Few Days
Three 90-minute EMDR sessions, completed over consecutive days, designed to create more space for therapeutic processing than weekly 55-minute appointments allow.
“The effects of trauma are stored in the body. Until they are addressed there, words alone are not enough.”
Bessel van der Kolk, MD
What Is an EMDR Intensive?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they carry less charge. An EMDR intensive delivers that work in longer, closely spaced sessions rather than one appointment a week — in this case, three 90-minute sessions completed over consecutive days (for example, across a long weekend).
This format is well suited to a specific memory, event, or theme you want to address directly, or to clients who want to make concentrated progress without a months-long weekly commitment.
Why Consider an Intensive
Less time living with symptoms. Concentrated processing over a few days can reduce the months you might otherwise spend managing symptoms week to week.
Momentum instead of restarting. Because the three sessions happen close together, we can build directly on each one rather than losing ground between weekly appointments.
A defined timeframe. Goals that might otherwise take months of weekly sessions can be worked through in a matter of days.
A clear starting point. If you've felt "stuck" in weekly therapy, an intensive offers a structured way to make real movement on one focused issue.
Who May Benefit
✔ You have a specific memory, event, or experience you want to process
✔ Weekly 55-minute sessions feel too fragmented for the depth of work you want to do
✔ You're preparing for a life transition and want to clear ground beforehand
✔ You've done trauma work before and are ready to go deeper on a particular issue
✔ You'd rather work through something over a few concentrated days than over several months
✔ You're coming from out of town and want to make the most of a short trip
Who May Not Be a Good Fit
You're currently in an acute crisis or unstable living situation
You haven't yet built basic coping and grounding skills
You're looking to address many unrelated issues in one intensive
(We'll talk through fit together during your consultation — an intensive isn't right for every situation, and that's a normal, expected part of the conversation.)
Before Your Intensive
We'll schedule a consultation to talk about what you'd like to focus on, your history, and whether an intensive is the right fit right now. If we move forward, you'll complete intake paperwork and a brief preparation call so we can use all three sessions efficiently.
During Your Three Sessions
Over consecutive days, we'll meet for three 90-minute sessions, working at your pace to process the target memory or theme. Because intensives can bring up significant emotion, each session is structured to keep you resourced and grounded throughout — this isn't about pushing through, it's about processing safely, with time between sessions for things to settle.
After Your Intensive
We'll close the final session by talking through what to expect over the following days and weeks. Many clients notice shifts that continue to settle in after the intensive ends. A brief follow-up session is available if you'd like one.
Common Reasons People Seek an Intensive
✔ A specific traumatic memory or event
✔ Anxiety tied to a particular experience
✔ Wanting focused work before a wedding, birth, surgery, deployment, or other transition
✔ Feeling "stuck" in weekly sessions and wanting to go deeper faster
✔ Living out of the area and wanting concentrated access to care during a short visit
EMDR Intensive — three 90-minute sessions over consecutive days — $1,000
(Private pay. Superbills available for out-of-network reimbursement upon request.)
Intensives are private pay. If you have out-of-network benefits, we can provide a superbill for you to submit. Some insurances may cover a portion. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.
They're designed to be completed close together — typically over a few consecutive days — so we can build momentum between sessions. We'll confirm scheduling during your consultation.
Most clients feel able to resume normal activities, but processing can be tiring, especially between sessions. However, EMDR is heavy work. We recommend keeping the days as light as possible.
The approach is the same EMDR method — the difference is spacing. Three 90-minute sessions completed over a few days let us build on each session's work right away, rather than waiting a week in between.
No, though we'll talk during your consultation about your history and readiness to make sure an intensive is a good starting point for you.
I've completed EMDR training and use it regularly in my clinical work. EMDRIA certification is a separate, additional credential I'm currently pursuing.
